April
1, 2006 - Park City, Utah - The Colorado Avalanche and New England
Bruins went toe-to-toe in a slugfest to decide who would go home with the
2006 Great Salt Cup championship. As in their first game, the two teams had
a fierce, hard-checking battle, but one that was contested cleanly and with
good sportsmanship. Amazingly, the game had no penalties, but neither team
felt that the match had been poorly officiated. A second referee was added
for the final to prevent some of the concerns that had arisen earlier in the
tournament.
The Bruins seemed to have finally adjusted to the 7000 foot altitude in Park
City by Saturday and came out strong without the initial lapse in play that
had been present in their first game with Colorado and their game with Utah.
Bruin's veteran centerman Danny Sousa, who turned in one of his best
tournament performances ever as a Bruin in the Great Salt Cup, drew first
blood for the Bruins with an unassisted goal at 9:42 in the first period.
He and Taylor Chace worked extremely well together, moving the puck in the
offensive zone, skating back deep to control center ice and complete the
Bruin's breakouts. The pair teamed up to assist Kevin Hosier who's
incredible effort resulted in another goal at 6:00 in the second period.
The defensive effort put in by both teams was outstanding with Colorado
goalie Scott Stacey and Bruins net minder Jeff Labbe both turning back shots
with next to impossible saves. Colorado's lone goal came at 9:15 in the
third on an improbable goal that Tim Howard shot from behind the net in the
corner that just happened to catch Jeff Labbe's skate blade at exactly the
right angle to redirect into his own net. Howard should have gone out and
immediately purchased a lottery ticket after the game. The final
minutes passed with the Avalanche mounting considerable pressure, but not
enough to break the Bruin's strong defense. Final score: Bruins 2, Colorado
1.
