Yes, it’s true that Big Mike is an amputee sled hockey player. In fact he’s a very good player who after only three years of playing the game, has progressed to the point where he was good enough to try out for the U.S. Sled Hockey Team this past summer. But Mike was also diagnosed with a form of lymphoma this past spring that would require chemotherapy treatment to battle the cancer. Hanuman soon realized that sled hockey was only a piece of a bigger story about a man dealing with a life-threatening condition in one of the most positive manners possible, and about his relationship with his children, the most important thing in his life. Mike’s story, as told by Hanuman through picture and sound, will be exhibited at the Salt Institute Gallery opening Friday evening, December 17th from 5 to 7 pm. The show will run January 4th through April 2nd. The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies is located at 110 Exchange Street in Portland. There is a wheelchair accessible entrance to the gallery.
