"In addition to the practical matter of being able to have a dark jersey to contrast against the white uniforms that are worn by a number of our competitors, the second jersey gives us a lot more flexibility in putting on the numerous exhibitions and clinics we hold each season," said Bruins Marketing Director, Craig Gray. "Prior to this point, we had to borrow the uniforms of one of our local club teams to put on an exhibition, and of course no self-respecting player from New Hampshire would be willing to be photographed wearing a Maine jersey, and vice-versa," he joked. "This way the Bruins will always win too!" The Bruins will be putting their new uniforms to the test when they travel to Detroit, Michigan in mid-February to compete in a multi-team tournament that is commonly referred to as the "nationals" for sled hockey in the United States. Sled hockey is the fast, exciting, rumble-tumble version of ice hockey played primarily by people with mobility disabilities, but also played by athletes without disabilities at every level with the exception of International Paralympic Committee sanctioned events. The game is essentially the same as any “stand-up” ice hockey game with the major difference being that all of the players sit in a sled which is attached to two hockey skate blades under the seat. Hard checking, raised puck shooting, and penalty killing are as much a part of sled hockey as they are in “stand-up” hockey. The New England Bruins Sled Hockey Team is sponsored by Amtrak, Ford Motor Company, Verizon Wireless, and ice sponsors, Northeast Passage, The Family Ice Center, and the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation. It is comprised of the best sled hockey players in New England and is always on the lookout for new players.
