Maine Black Bears Sled Hockey Program

Jan. 07, 2005 – Portland, ME: The radio audience of host Ray Richardson's WLOB Morning News recently had their ears and sensibilities assaulted when New England Bruins and Maine Black Bears Sled Hockey Team players Brett "The One True Jet" Goodnow and Craig Gray took to the airwaves to pitch sled hockey in the Southern Maine listening area.

Ray Richardson, a neighbor of Brett's, had developed an interest in sled hockey through Brett's stories and generously made a half-hour segment available for Craig and Brett to visit the station and talk about sled hockey. Members of the Black Bears who heard the segment commented that their teammates had done a good job explaining sled hockey but that Craig had a hard time getting a word in edgewise with Jet chirping like a parakeet.

The Black Bears Sled Hockey Team has regular ice time on Wednesday mornings at 9:20 thanks to the Family Ice Center's Opportunity Skate Program. These practices usually involve skills training, drills and scrimmaging. Northeast Passage, an adaptive sports and recreation organization operating out of the University of New Hampshire attends most practices and brings extra sleds and equipment for anyone wishing to give sled hockey a try. Anyone wishing to come out and skate with the Maine Sled Hockey Team should first check the schedule on www.maine.sledhockey.org and should contact Craig Gray at craig@sledhockey.org at least two days before the practice to make sure that there will be equipment available.
